Ο Άγιος Γεώργιος ο Σημειοφόρος Επίσκοπος Μυτιλήνης

Ο  Άγιος   Γεώργιος,   Επίσκοπος   Μυτιλήνης,   έζησε   κατά   τους   χρόνους   της εικονομαχίας.  Αγωνίσθηκε  σθεναρά  κατά  των  δυσσεβών    εικονομάχων  και   εξορίσθηκε   σε   κάποιο  νησί  της  Προποντίδος,   όπου   και  πέθανε   από  τις   κακουχίες   το   έτος   821 μ.Χ.   σε   ηλικία   σαράντα   πέντε  ετών.  Το   τίμιο λείψανό   του  παρέμεινε    ενταφιασμένο    επί    είκοσι   χρόνια    στον  τόπο    της  εξορίας.    Επί  Πατριάρχου   Κωνσταντινουπόλεως   Μεθοδίου   (842 – 847   μ.Χ.), μετά  την   αποκατάσταση  της   Ορθοδοξίας,   έγινε   η   ανακομιδή   πολλών ιερών λειψάνων Αγίων που πέθαναν στην εξορία, όπως του   Θεοφύλακτου Νικομηδείας, του Θεοδώρου του Στουδίτου και του Νικηφόρου Κωνσταντινουπόλεως.

Τότε,  και  συγκεκριμένα  κατά  τα  έτη    846 – 847   μ.Χ.,   ανεκομίσθηκε  στη Μυτιλήνη  με  πολλές  τιμές  και  το   τίμιο σκήνωμα  του   Αγίου    Γεωργίου.  Να  πως  περιγράφεται   στο    Βίο  του   το   γεγονός   αυτό:   «Πάντες   οι  της   νήσου Μυτιλήνης οικήτορες,  άμα  πρεσβυτέροις  και  παντί  τω   κλήρω  παρεγένοντο   ένθα   κατέκειτο  το  σώμα  του   οσίου    πατρός  ημών  και  ομολογητού  Γεωργίου, και  δι ’ όλης  της  νυκτός  αγρυπνήσαντες, τη  επιούση  ημέρα  λαβόντες  το  σώμα μετά   ψαλμών   και   ύμνων   απεκόμισαν αυτό   εις   την   ιδὶαν  νήσον    και    κατέθεικαν   αυτό  μετά  και  των  λοιπών  πατέρων,    δόξαν    αναπέμποντες    τω    Πατρί    και    τω   Υιώ   και   τω   Αγίω Πνεύματι».  
Ευλαβής   παράδοση,   που   διασώθηκε   μέχρι    τις  ημέρες  μας,    θεωρεί    ως  τόπο ταφής  του  Αγίου  τη    θέση   «Τρία   Κυπαρίσσια»   (Σαρή   Μπαμπά),  κοντά  στο   παρεκκλήσι  του  Αγίου  Ιωάννου  του  Προδρόμου.    Κατά    τον 18^ο   αιώνα  μ.Χ. εσώζετο  και  τιμόταν  στη Μυτιλήνη  η  χείρα    του    Αγίου.  Αυτή  πιθανώς  είναι η δεξιά χείρα που σώζεται   σήμερα   στο   Σκαλοχώρι και   φέρει   επιγραφή    «Άγιος   Γιόργις»   και   κοινώς   θεωρείται   ως   χείρα    του  Αγίου   Μεγαλομάρτυρος   Γεωργίου.

Θείου   Πνεύματος, καρποφορήσας, ως θεόφυτος  λειμών την  χάριν,  Ιεράρχα   των   αρρήτων   Γεώργιε,   τας   των   ψυχών   εγεώργησας  αύλακας,    ως  επιπνοίας  αΰλου  γεώργιον. Πάτερ  Όσιε,   Χριστόν   τον  Θεόν  ικέτευε,  δωρήσασθαι    ημίν   το    μέγα    έλεος.

Ως    ευσεβείας    γεωργός    και    μύστης    ένθεος

Και    της   σοφίας   θεοφύτευτον  γεώργημα

Φυτοκόμος    εχρημάτισας    των    αρίστων·

Της   αιρέσεως   διήλεγξας   το   φρόνημα·         
Όθεν  κράζομεν,   χαίροις  Πάτερ   Γεώργιε.

Χαίροις  γεωργίας  καινής  βλαστός, και  της    Εκκλησίας,   πνευματέμφορος γεωργός· χαίροις   Μυτιλήνης, ο θείος ποδηγέτης, Γεώργιε παμμάκαρ,  μύστα   της  χάριτος.

Saint George the Baptist Bishop of Mytilene

St. George, Bishop of Mytilene, lived during the times of iconoclasm. He struggled vigorously against dishonest iconoclasts and was exiled to an island of Propontida, where he died of hardships in 821 AD. at the age of forty-five years. His honest relic remained buried for twenty years at the place of exile. On the Patriarch of Constantinople (842 - 847 AD), after the reestablishment of Orthodoxy, a number of holy relics of saints who died in exile, such as Theophylatus of Nicomedia, Theodoros of Stoudos and Nikephoros of Constantinople, took place.

At that time, namely in the years 846 - 847 AD, he was reassembled in Mytilene with many honors and the honest relic of St. George. It is described in his Life that: "All the inhabitants of the island of Mytilene, fathers, and elders, and all the spoils, came from the body of our holy father and confessor George, and through all the night watchers, a body of psalms and hymns took it up to the priesthood and deposited this with the other fathers, glories referring to the Patrians and the Son and the Holy Spirit ".

A worthy tradition, which has survived to our days, considers the site of the Three Saints Baba near the chapel of St. John the Baptist as the burial site of the Saint. In the 18th century AD the hand of the saint was hanged and honored in Mytilene. This is probably the right hand that is currently preserved in Skalohori and is marked with the inscription "Saint George" and is commonly considered to be the hand of St. George the Great Martyr.
