Ο Άγιος Παύλος ο Ομολογητής και Ιερομάρτυρας

Ο  Άγιος  Παύλος,  ο  Ομολογητής  καταγόταν   από  την   Θεσσαλονίκη.  Υπήρξε  γραμματέας  του  αγιοτάτου  Πατριάρχη   Κωνσταντινουπόλεως  Αλεξάνδρου.  Όταν   απεβίωσε   ο    Αλέξανδρος,   ο   Παύλος  εξελέγχθηκε   Πατριάρχης.

Ο   αυτοκράτορας   Κωνστάντιος, όταν το πληροφορήθηκε δυσανασχέτησε,  γιατί   ήταν   οπαδός  της   αίρεσης   των   Αρειανών. Όταν ο Κωνστάντιος επέστρεψε  από  την  Αντιόχεια  στην Κωνσταντινούπολη,  απομάκρυνε  από τον πατριαρχικό θρόνο  τον  Παύλο  και  ανακήρυξε  αυθαίρετα Πατριάρχη, τον  αρειανόφρονα  Νικομηδείας  Ευσέβιο.  Τότε   ο  Άγιος  Παύλος  πήγε   στην   Ρώμη.  Εκεί  βρήκε  τον  Μέγα  Αθανάσιο,  τον  οποίο  είχε  απομακρύνει  από  το Πατριαρχείο    Αλεξανδρείας ο Κωνστάντιος. Πληροφορηθείς τα  γεγονότα,  ο   αυτοκράτορας  Κώνστας,   έστειλε   γράμμα   στον   αδελφό του  τον   Κωνστάντιο,   διαμαρτυρόμενος  για   την    στάση   του.   Έτσι   ο Παύλος   και   ο    Αθανάσιος   επανήλθαν  στο    αξίωμά    τους.  Δυστυχώς   μετά   από   λίγο  καιρό  ο Κώνστας πέθανε. Έτσι ο Κωνστάντιος   διέταξε,  από  την  Αντιόχεια   που   ήταν,  να απομακρύνουν τον  Παύλο  από  τον  Πατριαρχικό   θρόνο.   Μάλιστα   τον   εξόρισε   στην   Κουκουσό   της   Αρμενίας.         
Μία  μέρα που τελούσε την Θεία Λειτουργία   όρμησαν  καταπάνω  του Αρειανοί  και  τον  έπνιξαν  με  το ίδιο  του   το  ωμοφόριο.   Έτσι   ο  Ά γιος ετελείωσε   και    παρέδωσε  την  ψυχή  του  στον  Κύριο.

Θείας    πίστεως,  ομολογία,  άλλον  Παύλόν  σε,  τη    Εκκλησία,   ζηλωτήν  εν  ιερεύσιν  ανέδειξε.  Συνεκβοά  σοι  και  Άβελ  προς  Κύριον, και Ζαχαρίου   το  αίμα   το   δίκαιον.  Πάτερ  Όσιε,  Χριστόν  τον  Θεόν  ικέτευε,    δωρήσασθαι   ημίν   το    μέγα    έλεος.

Saint Paul the Confessor and the Witness

Saint Paul, the Confessor, came from Thessaloniki. He was secretary of the Patriarch of Constantinople Alexander the Great. When Alexander died, Paul was elected Patriarch.

Emperor Constantius, when he was informed, was irrelevant because he was a fan of the Arian heresy. When Constantius returned from Antioch to Constantinople, Paul was expelled from the patriarchal throne and arbitrarily proclaimed Patriarch, the nobleman of Nicomedia Eusebius. Then St. Paul went to Rome. There he found the Great Athanasius, whom Constantius had removed from the Patriarchate of Alexandria. Upon hearing the facts, Emperor Constantus sent a letter to his brother Constantius, protesting his stand. So Paul and Athanasius returned to their office. Unfortunately after a while Constant died. So Constantius ordered, from Antioch that it was, to remove Paul from the Patriarchal throne. He even banished him to Armenia in Cucus.

One day during the Divine Liturgy the Arians jumped on him and strangled him with his own shoulder blade. So the Son finished and surrendered his soul to the Lord.
