Οι Άγιοι Ονησιφόρος και Πορφύριος οι Μάρτυρες

Σχίστηκαν   οι   σάρκες   τους   και   πέθαναν   βαπτισμένοι   στα   αίματά  τους, κατά   τον   διωγμό   του   Διοκλητιανού.   Και   οι   δυο   υπηρετούσαν   σε   διάφορα φιλανθρωπικά έργα της Εκκλησίας. Συγχρόνως, ανήκαν στην ομάδα    που ανίχνευε κατά την διάρκεια της νύκτας και ανεύρισκε σώματα   μαρτύρων, που ρίχνονταν στις χαράδρες. Τα μάζευαν και  τα   παρέδιδαν   να   ταφούν με   την   αρμόζουσα   τιμή.     
Κάποτε,   όμως,   τους   ανακάλυψαν   και   τους   συνέλαβαν.   Κατόπιν  τους εξεβίασαν να αρνηθούν την πίστη τους. Αλλά   εκείνοι   έμειναν   σταθεροί στην    ομολογία   της   αγίας   πίστης   στον   Χριστό,   χωρίς   να   φοβηθούν   τις απειλές    και   τα   επικείμενα   μαρτύρια.   Τους   έδεσαν,  λοιπόν,  πίσω   από άγρια   άλογα,   τα   οποία  τους   έσυραν   με   δυνατό   καλπασμό, μέσα  από αγκάθια   και   πέτρες.   Όταν   τα   άλογα   σταμάτησαν   κουρασμένα,   μετά  από αρκετές ώρες δρόμου, τα σώματα των μαρτύρων βρέθηκαν   διαμελισμένα, πνιγμένα   στο   αίμα.  Και όπως αναφέρει η Αποκάλυψη, «είδον   την   γυναίκα μεθύουσαν   εκ   του   αίματος   των   αγίων   και   εκ   του   αίματος   των   μαρτύρων Ιησού». Είδα δηλαδή την γυναίκα, που είναι η διεφθαρμένη   ειδωλολατρική κοινωνία,   να   μεθάει   από   το    αίμα   των   χριστιανών,   που   καταδίωκε,   και από   το   αίμα   των   μαρτύρων   του   Ιησού.   Αλλά  ο   Θεός   «έκρινε   την   πόρνην... και   εξεδίκασε    το    αίμα   των   δούλων   αυτού   εκ   χειρός   αυτής».   Έπειτα,   όμως,   ο Θεός,   έκρινε   και   καταδίκασε   την   πόρνη,   τη   νοητή   Βαβυλώνα,  και εκδικήθηκε   το   αίμα   των   δούλων   του,   που   χύθηκε   από   τα   χέρια   της.
