Οι Άγιοι 10 Μάρτυρες οι εν Κρήτη

Από  αυτούς,  οι μεν   Θεόδουλος,   Σατορνίνος,   Εύπορος,   Γελάσιος   και Ευνικιανός, ήταν  από  τη   Γορτυνία   της   Κρήτης.   Ο   Ζωτικός,   από  την  Κνωσό.  Ο   Αγαθόπους   από   το   λιμένα   Πανούρμου.   Ο Βασιλειάδης   (ή   Βασιλείδης) από την Κυδωνία. Ο   Ευάρεστος   και   ο Μόβιος   (ή   Πόμπιος,   ή   Πόντιος)   από    το    Ηράκλειο.

Όλοι  μαρτύρησαν   τον   3^ο   αιώνα μ.Χ., όταν αυτοκράτορας  ήταν   ο Δέκιος.  Και οι δέκα με πολύ ζήλο εργάζονταν για τη διάδοση  του Ευαγγελίου  στο νησί. Καταγγέλθηκαν  στον  έπαρχο   Κρήτης,   που    ήταν   συνώνυμος του αυτοκράτορα, ονομαζόταν  δηλαδή και αυτός Δέκιος. Ο   έπαρχος,   όταν   είδε   την ανθηρή   νεότητά  τους   και   το αρρενωπό   τους   παράστημα,   προσπάθησε   να   τους   παρασύρει   με πολλές   υποσχέσεις   εγκόσμιων   απολαύσεων   και   ηδονών.   Αλλά  όταν   είδε   ότι   τίποτα   δεν   πετύχαινε,   διέταξε    να   τους  μαστιγώσουν,   και    κατόπιν   τους   λιθοβόλησαν.

Οι   γενναίοι   μάρτυρες   του   Χριστού υπέμειναν ηρωικά  τα βασανιστήρια,  ενθυμούμενοι   τα   λόγια   του   ψαλμωδού:   «Ανδρίζεσθε και κραταιούσθω η  καρδίᾳ υμών, πάντες  οι  ελπίζοντες επί  Κύριον». Δηλαδή, να έχετε γενναίο και  ανδρείο   φρόνημα,   και   η   καρδιά   σας   άς   γίνεται   κραταιά  και   ατρόμητη,   όλοι   εσείς   που   ελπίζετε   στον Κύριο.       
Κατόπιν,   με  διαταγή  του    επάρχου,   οι   στρατιώτες  έκοψαν  με τα ξίφη   τους    τις   τίμιες    κεφαλές  των   δέκα   χριστιανών   Αγίων.

Κρήτης   τα   εύοσμα,  άνθη   τιμήσωμεν, τα διαπνέοντα,   οσμήν   την ένθεον, Θεόδουλον και   Ζωτικόν, Γελάσιον  Σατορνίνον, Εύπορον   Ευάρεστον, Αγαθόποδα   Πόμπιον, Ευνικιανόν ομού, Βασιλείδην τε ένδοξον,  βοώντες προς  αυτούς  ομοφρόνως· χαίρε Δεκάς η  των Μαρτύρων.

Εωσφόρος έλαμψεν η των Μαρτύρων, σεβασμία  άθλησις, προκαταυγάζουσα  ημίν, τον εν Σπηλαίω  τικτόμενον,   όν   η   Παρθένος ασπόρως   εκύησεν.

Μεγαλυνάριον.
Όμιλος   θεόλεκτος   και   σεπτός, πίστει συνημμένος, και αγάπῃ  ειλικρινεί,   ώφθησαν   εν   Κρήτη, οι  Δέκα  Αθλοφόροι,   εχθρών   τας μυριάδας   καταπαλαίσαντες.

The Saints 10 Witnesses in Crete

But when he saw that nothing succeeded, he ordered them to be whipped, and then stoned.

The brave witnesses of Christ heroically endured the torture, remembering the words of the psalmist: "Thy heart and heart be lifted up, all ye that hope in the Lord." That is, to have a brave and valiant mind, and let your heart be steadfast and fearless, all of you who hope in the Lord.

Then, at the behest of the commander, the soldiers cut with their swords the honest heads of the ten Christian saints.
